Saturday 8th July
In 2018 the Church of England pledged to divest from all fossil fuel companies that were not in line with the Paris Agreement by 2023. Now that 2023 is upon us, no fossil fuel companies are in line with the Paris Agreement – all fossil fuel companies are expanding their fossil fuel operations. On 22nd June the Church Commissioners and Pensions Board accepted that, and announced their intention to divest from all oil and gas companies over lack of progress towards net zero.
Christian Climate Action has a long history of pushing church denominations to divest from fossil fuels, as we believe that it is morally wrong to be funding and making money from climate suffering. We have been campaigning on this for nearly a decade and the Church of England was one of the few big church denominations who had not divested.
Join us outside the General Synod on Saturday 8th July when the National Investing Bodies will be reporting to Synod on their decision, which we celebrate. However a number of Church of England diocese have still not divested. We will be outside the Synod from 8.30am to pray in gratitude for the National Investment Bodies decision and for a renewed focus on investing in ethical and renewable energy; and in protest against all ongoing investment in fossil fuels within the church and praying for those diocese still with fossil fuel investments to follow the lead of the National Investment Bodies and commit to rapid divestment.
At 1pm we will hold a short service to lament climate breakdown and the part played by fossil fuels in the ongoing suffering of Creation.
Between 11am and noon we will also praying on Zoom alongside our witness at the Synod. To join this please register on our Saturday Sessions page.
Sunday 9th July
The Diocese of Oxford is presenting a motion to the Synod on the Church’s response to the climate emergency which will be debated on Sunday afternoon. We will be outside the Synod praying for the Church to respond with urgent, meaningful action. Join us from 2pm. We are encouraging a focus on children as they will be most affected by the decisions we take today. Please do bring your children and grandchildren. We will provide child-friendly activities for them to pass their own message to the Synod.
We will also be attending Choral Eucharist at 11:00 am at York Minster. Join us at 10.30am outside the Minster to pray that the Diocese of York, which continues to invest in fossil fuels, chooses to divest.
