The Scottish Episcopal Church votes to go net zero

Today, members of CCA Scotland held a vigil outside of Scottish Episcopal Church Synod in Edinburgh, as they voted on whether to adopt a Net Zero Plan.

We were there to support the motion and to pray for the clergy and laity of the Synod and engaged with most Synod members over the day’s proceedings. Objective 10 in the Net Zero Plan motion was to build a movement. We encouraged Synod members in this, highlighting that combating climate change requires change at all levels – including individual, community, local authority, Holyrood, Westminster, business and more. We also encouraged them to get behind Christian Aid’s loss and damage campaign.

We are excited to share that the vote decision was to adopt the Net Zero Action Plan and this ended in an 80% majority.

Val King was at the vigil, she says: “As Christians, our stewardship of Creation is fundamentally important, as is the call to love our neighbour – which means everyone and in particular at this moment in time, our brothers and sisters in the global south who are already suffering from our failure to be good stewards.
The Christian church and all people of faith need to be leaders tackling the immense problem of climate change and modelling the way towards reducing consumption – and not just carbon consumption.
The resources presented to deliver the Net Zero Plan include a tool kit, cards and workshops, which are available to everyone.
I came away from this action feeling a wee bit more hopeful!”
