This autumn, CCA is running a Sacrament of Civil Disobedience (SofCD) book club for those who are considering taking arrestable or imprisonable action.

Sacrament of Civil Disobedience was originally published in 1994. It’s author, Rev. John Dear, is an internationally recognized voice for peace and nonviolence. He has been arrested some 85 times for actions concerning peace. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has described him as ‘the embodiment of a peacemaker, leading by example through his actions and writings.’ In 2022 he published a second edn. of the book, after working with Chris Donald and CCA’s very own Rev Sue Parfitt to update it to reflect all that has gone in the environmental protest movement in recent years.

The book is a civil resister’s field guide to nonviolent civil disobedience that is rooted in faith. It covers both the biblical roots of nonviolent civil disobedience and the practicalities of how to prepare for, do and deal with the consequences of, nonviolent civil disobedience.

Sessions will run from 7pm-8:30pm on Zoom on these dates:

Ahead of each session you will need to read a couple of chapters of the book and come ready to discuss them. Several members of CCA will facilitate different sessions, include Sue herself.

Although we are calling this a book club, it is important to note that it is not merely an opportunity to discuss the civil disobedience in an abstract and theoretical way. Please only sign up if you are seriously considering arrestable or imprisonable actions and want to discern if this is the right thing for you.
