An important announcement was made yesterday, that the Church of England Pensions Board and Church Commissioners are divesting from fossil fuel companies.
This comes off the back of years of campaigning by Christian Climate Action and other campaigning groups, such as charity Operation Noah.
Earlier this year Christian Climate Action held a series of prayerful protests at Cathedrals across England and Wales, urging divestment from fossil fuel companies. We have also held protests at CofE Synods over the years where divestment has been discussed.
Please help fund us, to get more hopeful stories like this one.
The following photos are of just some of the prayerful protests that Christian Climate Action members carried out at Cathedrals across England and Wales. These actions took place in March of this year.

This photo to the left is one of the first actions Christian Climate Action carried out, urging the CofE to divest from fossil fuels.
We carried it out in February 2015 at Synod in London. The banner read “We are young Christians. For us and our children, climate change is the biggest threat we face. Please pray and act for all those afflicted by climate change now and in the future. As a church community, we cannot continue to invest in fossil fuel companies. So we ask you, on our behalf, to divest now. ‘May God defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy’ (Is. 24:2-5).”
Holly-Anna Petersen took part in the above action at Synod and has been part of Christian Climate Action since. She commented on the recent divestment announcement, saying: “This is a great day for the integrity of the CofE. We can now take a stand for creation care, without being branded hypocritical. I hope this ushers in a new era for us, where the Church can worship our creator God, by being on the front line against environmental destruction. I’m so relieved that the Church of England is finally thinking of our young people. How must it have felt for young Anglicans knowing that their Church were making money from the stripping away of their future?”
