Barclays is the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Europe. If we donate to a charity that banks with Barclay’s, our money is channelled into fossil fuel expansion. When a charity chooses Barclays, this also gives Barclay’s social licence and political influence, as it is presenting itself as a bank associated with positive causes – instead of one which is bankrolling climate collapse. The same can be said for religious institutions as a number of diocese across the UK use Barclays as their bank.
If this frustrates you, and you want to get it out on paper, join us on September 18th 6pm. We will gather together on zoom with pens, paper and email cursors ready. We will have a laid back time of writing letters, and using the time to reflect on who we think it would be good to write to about Barclays and what might be helpful to write. We can help each other get our thoughts onto paper.
