A huge THANK YOU

From the 14th to the 24th Feb, we held a climate vigil, right outside the gates of power – the Houses of Parliament. The vigil kicked off with a church service at St Johns Church, Waterloo, and ended with a closing ceremony outside Downing Street.

Hundreds of Christians took part in the vigil over the 240 hours, and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to each and every one of you. Whether this was your first experience with CCA, or whether you’re an old hand at this – we hope you feel proud of taking a stand for creation.

It was your prayerful perseverance that made the vigil possible. Whether you joined in for an hour, a day, or a week. Whether your vigil stint was in the day or night. Whether you prayed in rain or shine. A huge thank you to each of you. You were part of something very powerful.

Who heard about it?

The No Faith In Fossil Fuels Vigil was all over the news – it hit around 300 media outlets, including:

We were interviewed on LBC radio, and were interviewed by Jacob Rees-Mogg on GB News.

We also sent invitations to MPs, and a number of MPs came out to join us, such as Catherine West, MP for Hornsey, seen in the photo to the left

Hearing from you

β€œI’m so glad I was able to join the prayer vigil outside Parliament. It’s such a privilege to stand alongside other Christians to pray together for our Government, Nation and the global climate crisis. So inspirational to meet people from different Christian backgrounds and groups who love God and care about this.” Kieran Dunne, Church Leader at The King’s Church, a Newfrontier’s church in Mid-Sussex

β€œIn a week when semblances of political structures were unravelling, we ravelled together in faith. A space to pause, lament, pray for action and hope.” Catherine Fish from Sheffield

“The comradeship of the vigil has been special. People have come from far and wide – Bristol and Cheltenham, Liverpool and Sheffield, Scotland and all points of London – and from different groups: Christian Aid and Cafod, Green Christian and Laudate Si, from Just Money and Tearfund, from local churches and of course from CCA.” Judith, London

And Judith has written a blog post on the vigil, which can be seen here

Help us do more prayerful protests

If you want to see more prayerful climate protests like this one, please donate to Christian Climate Action. We’ve got such a small team – currently just 4 people, each working one or two days a week. But we pack a whole lot of punch!

Who made the Vigil Possible?

A coalition of Christian organisations were involved in organising the vigil, including CAFOD, Christian Aid, Christian Climate Action, Tearfund, The Salvation Army, The Student Christian Movement, Green Christian, Operation Noah, Engage Worship, A Rocha UK and JPIT.

The vigil has three asks of the government:

  • Make the UK’s biggest polluters pay for climate action, through taxing fossil fuel giants.
  • Deliver and build on the UK’s international climate finance pledges and pay into the UN’s Loss and Damage Fund.
  • Ban new UK-based fossil fuel projects.
