Rewild the Church

Over the last few months, Christians across the UK have been putting together a new 95 Theses, on why the church should rewild. At the start of October, Christian Climate Action joined Wild Card for a march to St Pauls Cathedral, where the 95 Theses were delivered. This was a fantastic launch to the campaign, which is now in full swing.

WHY IS REWILDING IMPORTANT?

We face a twin crisis of climate and nature. A global target to protect 30% of the planet for nature by 2030 (known as ‘30×30’) was agreed in December 2022. Countries are expected to contribute to this global goal through domestic action. The UK is signed up to the commitment. Our ‘green and pleasant’ land may look lush, but in reality the diversity of wildlife in Britain has dwindled to a terrifying low.

Pollinator numbers are falling, ecosystems are beginning to collapse and species are dying out fast. We need the UK’s biggest landowners to rewild their lands before it’s too late. Landowners such as The Church of England need to step into their role as stewards and fulfil their duty to restore the integrity of creation and we need to hold them to account.

WHAT CAN THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND DO?

There is a growing campaign urging the The Church of England Commissioners to rewild 30% of their landholdings. The Commissioners are one of England’s biggest landowners. Analysis of Church Commissioners land reveals that it is just as nature depleted as the rest of Britain. Rewilding 30% of this land to meet the crucial UN target of 30×30 would create a new area of land for nature measuring half the size of Dartmoor. It would send an inspiring message of hope to Christian communities around the world and could inspire a wave of action for nature just when it’s needed most.
