On the 1st of March we partnered with both The Climate Choirs Movement and Wildcard to create a 200 person-strong singing flash mob at St Pauls Cathedral. The flash mob was peaceful in nature and the singing took place before the Cathedrals Evensong service.
The Climate Choirs Movement created a beautiful video, which shows the flashmob taking place and explains why it is important for the church to rewild its land.
The action was also written up different media outlets, such as The Church Times. Click here to read the article.
Why are we asking the Church of England to Rewild its land?
We face a twin crisis of climate and nature. A global target to protect 30% of the planet for nature by 2030 (known as ‘30×30’) was agreed in December 2022. Countries are expected to contribute to this global goal through domestic action. The UK is signed up to the commitment. Our ‘green and pleasant’ land may look lush, but in reality the diversity of wildlife in Britain has dwindled to a terrifying low.
There is a growing campaign urging the The Church of England Commissioners to rewild 30% of their landholdings. The Commissioners are one of England’s biggest landowners. Analysis of Church Commissioners land reveals that it is just as nature depleted as the rest of Britain. Rewilding 30% of this land to meet the crucial UN target of 30×30 would create a new area of land for nature measuring half the size of Dartmoor. It would send an inspiring message of hope to Christian communities around the world and could inspire a wave of action for nature just when it’s needed most.
