If stopping fossil fuel expansion is something you’re passionate about, we would love you to join our upcoming vigils in London. If we stand any chance of stopping climate breakdown, we need to stop fossil fuel expansion. All new fossil fuels need to remain in the ground, meaning that we can have no new oil and gas fields.

In CCA, one of our key campaigns is Stop Rosebank – a campaign urging the UK government and Equinor (the main company behind the proposed project) to cease all progress with the oil field. Rosebank is a key oil field to stop, because if a relatively advanced project like Rosebank is refused permission, then that will mean that the other 15 approved North Sea oil licenses that are already in the “pipeline” have very little chance of approval. So that will effectively be the end of New Oil & Gas in the UK.

Tell me the nitty-gritty of this campaign!

On the 19th June the government issued the new guidance for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for new oilfields, which state that Scope 3 assessment guidelines must be included. This was based on information gathered during the Oil & Gas consultations during early 2025 (CCA took part via a joint submission).

Equinor/Ithaca are therefore now able to re-submit their EIA for Rosebank. We believe this will take place by mid-July. That re-submission then goes out to public consultation for 30 days. At the end of the 30-day consultation period the decision is then back with the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) – they will probably take 4-6 weeks to assess the new EIA. So, a final decision for the future of Rosebank will probably be in late September.
