⛔🛢STOP ROSEBANK🛢⛔

Consultation ends on 20th Nov

We have an opportunity during November & December to stop a new oil field in the UK.

Rosebank is the largest undeveloped oil field in the UK. If the oil there is extracted it could give rise to 200 million tonnes of additional CO2 emissions.

A government consultation on Rosebank ends on 20th November. A decision by the government to approve or reject Rosebank will follow within 4-7 week of the consultation ending.

📍Weds 19th November

CCA & friends Stop Rosebank Vigil at HM Treasury: 12.45-13.45 (after the Parliament Vigil)

Previously we’ve focussed on tax numbers at the Treasury, this time we’ll probably keep it simple, and remind them that approving Rosebank equals climate denial, and that we require climate leadership from the UK Govt.

📍Thurs 20th November

Stop Rosebank Coalition Mass Picket between the 2 entrances at DESNZ: 8am-9am

Stop Rosebank Westminster MP green card-ing: 9:30am – 12:00pm

20th Nov is an important day in as much as it’s symbolic, so it feels like a good excuse to go BIG! Please come along to the Mass Picket if you can, and join CCA, Fossil Free London, Mothers Rise Up & other coalition partners.

We know that the final decision on Rosebank rests with the government. That’s why after the picket, we’ll be taking our energy and passion right to our politicians by going to parliament to ‘greencard’ our MPs.

Greencarding is the simplest way of arranging a meeting with your MP – it’s a process by which anyone can enter parliament and ‘greencard’ their representative, i.e. letting them know that you would like to speak to them.

This is your chance to take your campaigning to the next level by having a face-to-face meeting with your MP. When oil & gas industry lobbyists are meeting politicians at a record rate, it’s essential that we’re there to be a voice for people & planet.

To know:

  • You can’t guarantee that your MP will see you – but they will be told that you attempted to contact them, and be expected to respond.
  • If you want to increase the chance of your MP being available you can write to them in advance to let them know you’ll be coming, but this isn’t necessary for greencarding.
  • There might be some waiting time involved – it can take up to 30 minutes to enter parliament (but it likely won’t) and you might then have to wait for your MP to become available. We will all be there together, and other activities will be going on whilst we wait.
  • You have to go through airport-style security to get into parliament, and you can’t take any placards, flags or other campaign materials.
  • Experts in democratic engagement from Hope for the Future will be on hand to support Stop Rosebank, and to answer any questions on the day.

Background

The Stop Rosebank network, of which CCA is a part, has made significant strides this year. The network has:

  • Mobilised in response to guidance that an application to develop Rosebank needs to consider all the emissions that will result from both extracting and burning the oil.
  • Held a national Stop Rosebank Day of Action with over 20 actions across the country
  • Handed in over 1 million signatures to 10 Downing Street calling on Keir Starmer to reject Rosebank and all new oil and gas.

Now, the moment we’ve been waiting for is here. Equinor has re-applied to develop Rosebank, and the UK government is now assessing the application.

The government is running a 30-day consultation on the new information submitted by Equinor, before making a fresh decision to reject or approve Rosebank. The 30-day consultation closes on 20th November.

From the closure of the consultation, the decision will be back in the government’s hands.
