CCA is really excited to be organising this event! Fr. John Dear is an internationally recognized voice for peace and nonviolence. He has been arrested some 85 times for actions concerning peace. Archbishop Desmond Tutu has described him as ‘the embodiment of a peacemaker, leading by example through his actions and writings.’

John has inspired many members of CCA in their journey as activists. In particular, his book Sacrament of Disobedience has been a great source of both encouragement and practical help as many of us have prepared to engage in acts of civil disobedience. It was originally published in 1994, but in 2022 John published a second edition of the book after working with Chris Donald and CCA’s very own Rev Sue Parfitt to update it to reflect all that has gone in the environmental protest movement in recent years.

The book is a civil resister’s field guide to nonviolent civil disobedience that is rooted in faith. It covers both the biblical roots of nonviolent civil disobedience and the practicalities of how to prepare for, do and deal with the consequences of, nonviolent civil disobedience. Shane Claiborne has described it as: ‘firm footing for a life of holy trouble.’

Come and hear about the rich tradition of civil disobedience within the Christian faith and consider the call to nonviolent direct action and civil disobedience. Whether you are new to activism or you’re an old hand, we’re sure John will inspire you.
