Urging the Church To Re-wild on the Eve of World Environment Day

On the eve of World Environment Day, a dozen people from CCA and Wild Card held a huge pink banner outside Church House. Surrounding the occasion with prayer, we handed out leaflets to passers-by and to some of those going into the offices, before handing in our own letter. We were – and will continue – asking the Church Commissioners to stand by our Christian calling to serve and protect the Earth, and most specifically to increase the biodiversity of the environment which is, crucially, our life support system.

In line with the Kumming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the UK has undertaken to ensure and enhance 30% of both terrestrial biodiversity and marine environments by 2030. Wild Card’s demand is quite simply that the Church Commissioners take the lead and rewild 30% of the land in their care by 2030.

This is the third time we have written to the Church Commissioners. An exert of our letter reads:

“We want the Earth to continue to be an effective life support system for us humans, which undoubtedly is also part of God’s desiring. Without a rich biodiversity, our environment will suffer.

Soils will loose their productivity, plants requiring pollinators will decline, waterways will become stagnant, seas will become lifeless, the air we breathe will become polluted, and vast tracts of land will become deserts.”
