Christian Climate Action is running an exciting campaign urging cathedrals and diocese to switch to a bank that does not fund fossil fuels. A number of cathedrals and dioceses are either already banking ethically, or have committed to make the switch to a fossil free bank, and we have some exciting updates which have turned up the heat on this campaign
Former Archbishop of Canterbury calls on Cathedrals to switch to a fossil free bank
Dr Rowan Williams said: “It is excellent news that so many cathedrals have already signalled their willingness to change to more ethically grounded banking options. The public profile and reputation of cathedrals remains high, even in a society that is less openly religious than it was, so the standards of vision and hope that they set matter to everyone. “It would be wonderful to see more joining in this witness.”
This story was reported widely in the press. For example, it was in The Standard and The Independent.
The message of Ethical Banking was delivered to Cathedrals who aren’t replying to our emails
While most cathedrals across the UK have been engaging with our emails with them on this important area, some have decided not ignore the issue by not replying. But don’t worry, we are making sure the message is heard loud and clear, by reading out the emails out loud in the cathedrals! Video below.
Vigils continue at cathedrals across the country
Last month we saw Christian Climate Action members held vigils at Exeter, Winchester, Gloucester, Hereford and Ripon Cathedrals. More recently we’ve also held vigils at St Pauls Cathedral, Winchester Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, St Albans Cathedral and Guildford Cathedral. They have been a great opportunity to engage with cathedral staff and visitors on the issue, and explain why banking choice has such a huge impact on the world around us.
And more vigils are on the horizon. If you would potentially like to get involved in one of these vigils at a cathedral near you, please contact christianclimateaction@gmail.com
