Three members of Christian Climate Action (CCA) attended the Barclays AGM on 7th May, where they stood up during the chairman’s speech and sang ‘Stop In the Name of Love, Before you Break God’s Earth, Think it Over’. This was based on the chorus of the famous Supreme’s song.
CCA members were at the AGM because they believe Barclays must exclude finance for fossil fuel expansion from their business to help tackle climate breakdown. Barclays is the biggest funder of fossil fuels in Europe. In 2024 they invested $35bn in fossil fuels, an 55% increase on the year before.
Individuals also spoke about about the harm Barclays is doing to planet and about justice. Some people also plan to challenge Barclays by asking questions during the AGM.
Barclays refused entry to three further CCA people.
Sue Hampton, the activists who spoke out in the meeting said:
When a bank is as big and dirty as Barclays the destruction it has caused, and continues to wreak, is huge. But if it stopped funding fossil fuels it would make a huge difference. That’s what we’re challenging the bank to do: to stop, in the name of love.
A CCA spokesperson added:
Barclay’s profit for the first quarter of 2026 was £2.8 billion. How many of those pounds are soaked in the blood of innocent people killed in conflict? How many of them are dripping in oil money? We disrupted their AGM today because we refuse to let this go unchallenged. We have no choice as followers of Jesus but to call them out.
Outside the venue, a group of people held a silent prayer vigil with a ‘Drop Barclays who fund climate chaos’ banner.
The actions follows on from Christian Climate Action members attending the NatWest AGM in Edinburgh.
